After two straight days of violent haredi riots in the Jerusalem bedroom suburb of Beit Shemesh over the alleged desecration of graves at a building site there, moderate haredi Member of Knesset Rabbi Dov Lipman of the Yesh Atid Party, has reportedly called for the police and courts to crack down on the rioters.
"After two days in which extremists lit fires in our beloved city of Beit Shemesh, we can no longer sit quietly. We are dealing with something which is endangering the lives of the residents of Ramat Beit Shemesh [the neighborhood where the riots took place] and the entire area.
“I applaud the police for arresting the hooligans but the process must continue further. They cannot be released to their homes but must experience the full strictness of the law. And this must not only be applied to the hooligans but also to those who sent them - the rabbis who incite them.
"We cannot allow concern for the dead to come at the expense of the welfare of those who are alive. This is a desecration of God's name and it disgraces Judaism,” Lipman, himself a resident of Beit Shemesh, said in a statement reported by Arutz Sheva.
Before being elected to Knesset, Lipman helped lead the Modern Orthodox and moderate haredi fight against haredi attacks on little Modern Orthodox schoolgirls the haredim deemed to be immodestly dressed.
