Israel’s High Court of Justice decided not to force the government to immediately induct hundreds of haredim into the IDF. Instead, the High Court reportedly opted to allow haredim who have already been drafted and who are scheduled to report to induction centers this month to have their military service delayed by the government until a new draft law is passed. However, the time these haredim spend waiting to report will not count toward the time they are mandated to serve in the military.

Israel’s High Court of Justice decided not to force the government to immediately induct hundreds of haredim into the IDF, the Jerusalem Post reported. Instead, the High Court reportedly opted to allow haredim who have already been drafted and who are scheduled to report to induction centers this month to have their military service delayed by the government until a new draft law is passed. However, the time these haredim spend waiting to report will not count toward the time they are mandated to serve in the military.
This solution was raised by the High Court as a potential compromise earlier this week, but liberal groups refused to accept it, noting among other things the government’s inscencerity and its concerted efforts to find ways to allow haredim to dodge the draft despite a previous High Court ruling mandating haredim to serve in the IDF just as every other Jewish Israeli must do. They also saw the proposed compromise as irrelevant because if the proposed draft law passes, none of the haredim already drafted who have not reported to induction centers will be required to serve.
The High Court adopted its proposed compromise solution anyway, and noted that compelling the IDF to enlist all drafted haredim immediately would damage efforts by the government to find ways to resolve the issue.
Update 5:28 pm CDT – The High Court of Justice also reportedly ordered Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon (Likud) to explain why he is not inducting over 600 haredim who received draft notices and who are by law mandated to report to induction centers this month – a key fact the Jerusalem Post omitted from its original report.
