For the fourth straight day, haredim protested and then rioted at a construction site in the Jerusalem bedroom suburb of Beit Shemesh.
Dozens of haredim linked to the graves protection organization Asra Kadisha tried to stop the construction work, which they insist is disturbing ancient Jewish graves, Ynet reported.
Police arrested four haredim for disorderly conduct and for physically attacking police officers.
Asra Kadisha is in essence a subsidiary of the Mea-Shearim-based haredi umbrella organization Edah Haredit. While most Edah rabbis support Asra Kadisha’s claims about the site, many haredi rabbis not linked to Edah Haredit do not.
Asra Kadisha has reportedly been caught in the past extorting developers and archeologists and accepting payments to halt violence at building sites and digs. It has also allegedly physically threatened archeologists and tried to physically attack them.
Monday, more than 200 haredim rioted at the site, leading to 29 arrests.
Slightly lower numbers of haredim rioted Tuesday, and Wednesday saw the number of haredi protesters and rioters down to about 50 with 3 arrests.
Last week, the elderly haredi developer of the site was severely beaten in Jerusalem home in front of his wife and daughter, allegedly by a gang of Asra Kadisha thugs, and was hospitalized.
Work on the site continues despite the continued violence.
