A Gur (sometimes spelled Ger or Gerrer) hasidic leader has allegedly ordered men not to hug, touch or shake hands with other men, the Hebrew daily Ma’ariv reported based on a report on a haredi blog.
Rabbi Abraham Benjamin Silberberg, the head of Gur’s Education Department, allegedly issued the order at a special meeting of Gur educators because handshakes and other normative incidental physical contact between men could lead to sin.
Silberberg allegedly claims that when men shake hands or have other incidental contact with other men it automatically wakes up the evil inclination and brings on obscene thoughts, the BaOlam Shel Haredim blog reportedly wrote.
Silberberg allegedly ordered teachers to start training students not to shake hands with or touch other students unless absolutely necessary (for example, to prevent a classmate from falling).
Instead, he allegedly ruled that men are only allowed to touch fingertips, but it is better not to even do that, he allegedly insisted.
"This new law will ensure the sanctity of the next generation," Silberberg allegedly said.
Gur is well-known for have extreme regulations governing sex and marriage, including banning foreplay and instructing men to climax on entry, immediately withdraw and move away from their wives.
Ma’ariv has been unable to confirm this newest report with Gur officials.
