The paws of a sphinx statue, inscribed with the name of a pharaoh who ruled in 2500 BC, King Mycerinus, is the only known sphinx of that pharaoh and the only Egyptian sphinx found outside Egypt. Amnon Ben-Tor, the Tel Hazor excavation's director, said when ancient cities fell, the heads and hands of statues were often cut off. Tel Hazor was the capital of the city of Canaan 4,000 years ago, its population reaching 20,000. Located on the route connecting Egypt and Babylon.
