Minister of Education MK Rabbi Shai Piron was supposed to give a speech at the graduation ceremony of the Kiyat Ono Academic College Jerusalem extension program’s graduation ceremony tonight, but the speech was cancelled after haredi students threatened to boycott the ceremony, Ynet reported.
“Interested parties, mostly out of the haredi campus, chose to exploit the graduation ceremony to gain political credit at the expense of the student public. We will not allow a handful of haredi wheeler dealers to tarnish the ceremony and a whole class,” the college said in a prepared statement.
Piron, of the Yesh Atid Party and a Modern Orthodox rabbi, is hated in the haredi community for his support of a plan to compel haredi schools to teach basic secular subjects like math and English, and for his party’s support of the proposed haredi draft.
