Bnei Brak To Remove Zionist Street Names, Add New Names Of Haredi Rabbis

The Israeli city of Bnei Brak was founded and built by Zionist Orthodox Israelis, but soon there will be no visible trace of that history left.
The office of Bnei Brak Mayor Rabbi Avraham Rubinstein has reportedly decided to remove all the remaining names of Zionist leaders and concepts from streets in the now-haredi city and rename them after haredi rabbis – none of whom were Zionists.
For example, Kibbutz Galuyot (Ingathering of the Exiles) Street will be renamed Rabbi Shlomo Berman Street. Berman was a former rosh yeshiva (dean) of the Ponevezh Yeshiva.
Second Aliyah (Wave of Immigration to Israel) Street will become Admor From Lublin Street and Mother of Moshavot Street will be named after a former haredi Member of Knesset.
Rubinstein has already changed the names of streets named for Theodore Herzl, the father of the Zionist movement, and Israel’s second prime minister, Moshe Sharett.
Rubinstein also plans on renaming Jerusalem Street as Rabbi Yitzchak Shlomo Ungar Street.
He assured city residents that they can object to the wholesale street name changes before they are made. Rubenstein also said that, as a courtesy, the city will notify relatives of those Zionists whose names will be erased.
