Dutch police have reportedly asked Israel for help in investigating allegations against a Tel Aviv teacher who is suspected of sexually abusing students at a haredi school just outside Amsterdam.
The teacher, “Ephraim S.,” immigrated to Israel last year after being fired from the Cheder school in Buitenveldert for “inappropriate conduct,” the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported today, the JTA reported.
The haredi school has students whose ages range from 2- to 18-years-old.
The teacher, who is in his 20s, reportedly is currently giving private lessons in Israel.
De Telegraaf reported that multiple families and students filed police complaints against the teacher, who fled the Netherlands for Israel after those complaints were filed but before an arrest warrant was issued. Additionally, a 16-year-old male student admitted having “sexual contact” with the teacher.
Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs, a Chabad rabbi who is also Holland’s chief interprovincial rabbi, is a member of the Cheder’s board of directors. He reportedly said the Cheder also sought charges against the teacher, and insisted that the Cheder followed the law as soon as it was told about the allegations.
“From the second the first complaint came in, we consulted the lawbook and did everything in accordance to it so nothing gets swept under the carpet here,” he reportedly told the JTA.
Jacobs also told De Telegraaf that the allegations “aroused panic in some teachers, who are now afraid their children have also been molested.”
Jacobs told the paper that “Ephraim S.” denied the allegations when they surfaced.
It is unclear whether The Netherlands will seek the the teacher’s extradition.
“Ephraim S.” reportedly taught at the Cheder for about one year.
