If haredim are forced to serve in Israel’s military, many Jews will no longer see Israel as their national home, Member of Knesset Rabbi Meir Porush of the Ashkenazi haredi United Torah Judaism Party threatened this week.
Arutz Sheva reports that Porush was meeting with the French ambassador to Israel when the ambassador asked Porush about the haredi community’s reaction to the government’s plan to draft haredim.
Porush told the ambassador that Israel is able to survive in the Middle East because of the merit of Torah study, not because of its army.
Porush then noted that Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, declared that Israel is the national homeland of every Jew, and pointed out that Ben Gurion promised haredi leaders that Israel would respect the haredi community’s way of life.
“If, Heaven forbid, they try to force those learning Torah to enlist [in the military, thereby disrespecting the haredi way of life], this won’t be a [Jewish] national home. We will declare, and the whole world will know, that this is not the home of those who keep Torah and mitzvot. Obviously, this will have far-reaching consequences,” Porush told the ambassador.
