Sefardi Haredim Reportedly Agree To Government Education Demands

Education Minister Shai Piron reportedly told Ynet late today that haredim had accepted that secular subjects like math would have to be taught in haredi schools.
Piron reportedly reached an agreement with the leader of the Sefardi haredi Shas Party, Aryeh Deri that calls for the Education Ministry to establish a network of State-haredi schools as an alternative to the unofficial haredi schools – most of who receive state funding – that currently exist.
“This is an historic night. Haredi schools will be subject to standardized testing and core studies in order to gain funding,” Piron reportedly said.
"For the first time the haredim are accepting the terms of the education system,” a jubilant Piron reportedly said.
An Education Ministry official reportedly told reporters that as part of the agreement, the Shas network of schools itself will be obligated to teach the core curriculum and operate in accordance with the Education Ministry's guidelines. In return, the schools' state funding will not be cut.
