Armando Ramiro Garcia-Arenales, a former Agriprocessors kosher slaughterhouse worker with a long criminal history, pleaded guilty today to illegally reentering the US after being deported and to illegally possessing ammunition.
The 30-year-old Guatemalan native was arrested on March 1 during a routine traffic stop. Numerous rounds of 9mm ammunition were found in his car, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported.
He faces up to 30 years in prison along with a $500,000 fine and $200 in special assessments. There could also be a period of six years of supervised release following the imprisonment, although Garcia will most likely be deported as soon as his sentence is served.
Two weeks after his arrest, officers from the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement discovered that Garcia had been arrested on May 12, 2008 during the massive immigration raid at Agriprocessors kosher slaughterhouse in Postville. He was subsequently convicted in federal court for aggravated identity theft and ordered deported.
In 2005, Garcia was found guilty of delivery of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to deliver in an Iowa state court.
