After what police say was a prolonged undercover investigation, Israel Police and Tax Authority inspectors raided the haredi city of Elad’s city hall today, making five arrests – including the haredi city’s mayor, Rabbi Yitzhak Idan, Yeshiva World reported.
Police told the media the arrested suspects are suspected of committing bribery, negotiating bribes, breach of trust, fraud, money laundering and evading taxes.
Police reportedly searched Elad city hall along with the homes and offices of Idan and the four other suspects.
Idan is also suspected of violating building code regulations.
The Rishon Letzion Magistrate's Court extended Idan's remand for two days.
Police requested a four-day remand but the magistrate refused, reportedly saying there is reason to believe that Idan would try to intervene with the investigation.
