Yeshiva World reports that yesterday the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court sentenced a mashgiach (kosher supervisor, often but not always a rabbi) from Betar Illit to only five months in prison and a $2,226 fine for intentionally dumping a pot of scalding water two years ago on an employee of a factory that he supervised.
The employee was burned on his scalp, face, neck, shoulders, back and the palms of his hands.
The haredi mashgiach told the court that he decided to pour the scalding hot water on the employee because the employee regularly taunted and punched him. He said that he warned the employee to stop but he refused, and the abuse continued unabated over a long period of time.
The mashgiach said that he asked the factory’s management for help but they did nothing, so the mashgiach warned the employee that he will pour boiling water on him if he doesn’t stop the harassment and abuse.
But the employee did not stop, so the mashgiach heated a pot of water and dumped it on the employee, burning him.
In court, the mashgiach expressed remorse and told the court that he did not realize the damage scalding water would do to the employee.
In its ruling, the court noted that the mashgiach lost his job and was unemployed for the year following the attack, and it noted the mashgiach’s exceptionally large family – 14 children.
Because of those factors, the court sentenced the mashgiach to only five months in prison, even those the assault should have brought a much longer prison term.
