Members of the Council of Torah Sages of Agudath Israel met yesterday in Jerusalem in special session to deal with the new government’s threat to enforce the law and defund any haredi school or yeshiva that is not teaching the country’s core curriculum.
Behadrei Haredim reports that the meeting was originally scheduled for Sunday night, but was moved up to avoid holding it on Israel’s Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers, Yom HaZikaron, which began at sunset Sunday evening.
Agudath Israel is the hasidic faction of the United Torah Judaism (UTJ) political party.
The meeting was attended by hasidic rebbes and hasidic Members of Knesset.
The Members of Knesset were only in the room to answer questions posed by the rebbes, and all were asked to leave the room while the rebbes deliberated and reached a decision at the end of the meeting.
And that decision?
Apply economic “sanctions” in the near future against the Government of Israel until it stops “interfering” with haredi education and stops drafting haredi yeshiva students.
