An Israeli ministerial committee has decided to slash funding of haredi yeshivot, seminaries and schools 30%, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reports based on a Ma'ariv report published earlier today.
The move was reportedly authorized by Finance Minister Yair Lapid and is expected to save Israel approximately NIS 340 million ($94 million) per year.
The ministerial committee on “equalizing the burden(s)” is also working on a replacement for Tal Law, which allowed haredi yeshiva students to evade the draft but was ruled illegal by Israel’s High Court of Justice in February 2012. Its recommendations for drafting haredi yeshiva students are due next month.
