Five Israelis were arrested yesterday in a series of violent attacks on black people they thought were African refugees. The attacks took place in south Tel Aviv. Two of the attackers are minors; all are males.
While most of the victims are African refugees, the Jerusalem Post reports in two of the beatings the attackers mistook Ethiopian Jews for African non-Jewish refugees and beat and robbed them.
One of those Ethiopian Jews attacked was hospitalized for head injuries.
None of the other victims were injured seriously enough to need hospitalization.
Three months ago, four Eilat men were indicted in a series of violent attacks and robberies of African refugees there.
All of those victims needed medical treatment.
After their arrests, Eilat police released a photo of the suspects’ car showing a metal pole, a knife, a chain and other implements used in the attacks.
Over the past two years, South Tel AViv has seen a series of violent attacks and arsons against African refugees including the firebombing of a 24-hour daycare that catered to refugees’ children.
There have been similar attacks in Jerusalem, as well, including an arson of an occupied apartment.
Right wing and Sefardi haredi politicians have frequently incited against the refugees, and the governments of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly tried to find ways to avoid upholding international treaties that protect refugees that Israel is a signatory to.
Netanyahu’s governments have also made it next to impossible for non-Jewish refugees to gain official refugee status and have blocked all legitimate avenues of work for the refugees while at the same time providing no food or housing assistance for them. This has forced refugees to work in day labor or other cash jobs where they are frequently exploited by their illegal employers. Refugees often sleep 20 or even 30 people to small one and two room apartments. Some others sleep outdoors in parks on the beach.
Netanyahu has a plan to inter migrants in specially constructed tent cities and camps built like prisons where refugees would be prisoners in all but name – a clear violation of international law – but has not implemented the plan because the number of incoming refugees has dropped dramatically since the Muslim Brotherhood took over Egypt, making Egypt even more dangerous for refugees to cross than it was previously.
