"Last year there were at least two serious incidents. They have no permits and fire fighting equipment. Last year a young man's hand was amputated, [when it was] trapped in the machine making holes in the matzohs.” The Fire Service also warns that many of these illegal matzoh bakeries have underage workers who are not properly trained in safety issues, and even little children are allowed in the bakeries near dangerous equipment and wood- or coal-fired ovens ovens that reach extremely high temperatures. Many of these illegal bakeries do not have fire extinguishers or first aid supplies, either.
