Sefardi Rabbi Threatened To Harm Yair Lapid

Israel Channel 1’s religious affairs reporter Uri Revach aired a clip Thursday night of Rabbi Eyal Amrami, the rabbi of a Sephardi synagogue in the Har Homa neighborhood of Jerusalem, threatening Yesh Atid party founder and head Yair Lapid, the Jerusalem Post reported.
“If [Lapid] continues what he is doing, God forbid, he has to know his career in the Jewish world is simply over. He will no longer be a part of the Jewish people. There will be no difference between him and an animal. If someone touches someone’s eye, they respond immediately and protect themselves,” Amrami said.
The Sefardi haredi Shas party told the Post that Amrami is not linked to Shas in any way.
Lapid said he wasn’t worried by Amrami’s threat. Lapid also said that he would, “continue to lead the effort to equalize the burden of service, knowing that the citizens of the country must obey the law.”
Even so, Shas founder and spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef called Lapid “contemptible” and ruled that Yesh Atid should not be allowed to join the new coalition government.
Amrami reportedly previously made similarly extreme statements about Zionist Orthodox leaders.
