Leib Glanz, a Satmar former New York City Department of Corrections chaplain who was also an administrator in Satmar’s United Talmudical Academy (UTA) school system, got a slap on the wrist today from the federal government.
Glanz conspired with his brother Menashe to defraud the government of more than $220,000 in federal housing subsidies. Both men pleaded guilty last year – Leib to making false statements to the federal government with the intent to defraud, Menashe to theft of government funds.
Leib Glanz was sentenced today to 45 days in prison. His brother Menashe was sentenced to six months in prison last week.
Leib could have been sentenced to six months in prison and Menashe could have served 18 months. Menashe also agreed when he pleaded guilty to repay more than $186,000 of the stolen funds.
Although evidence of UTA involvement in the scam and in related scams allegedly exists, the US Attorney chose not to prosecute the Satmar schools or purse a case against them.
Leib Glanz has a long history of controversial and unethical behavior and was forced out of his city chaplain's position after throwing and exclusive bar mitzvah party for the son of a rich inmate. The part was held in the Tombs and featured lavish catered food, drinks and entertainment. He also accepted an expensive gift from the rich inmate's family.
