David Kramer, a former teacher at Chabad’s Yeshivah College in Melbourne, Australia, was in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court Friday to have the dates set for his committal hearing.
A committal hearing is a cross between a grand jury and a preliminary hearing. It is mandatory in most criminal cases in common law jurisdictions outside the United States. Its purpose is to make sure there is enough evidence against the suspect to continue to trial.
Kramer, who fled Australia for the haredi city of Emmanuel, Israel in 1993, allegedly with the help of Chabad leadership, was extradited to Australia from the US last year.
He is charged with 10 counts of indecent [sexual] assault against a child. The child sexual abuse allegedly took between 1989 and 1992 when he worked at Chabad’s Yeshivah College.
In 1993, several students at the Chabad school complained that Kramer sexually assaulted them.
In 2008, Kramer pleaded guilty to one count of sodomy of a child under 14 and one count of sexual misconduct. He met the boy in the Nusach Hari B'nai Zion Synagogue in St. Louis, Missouri where Kramer served as a voluntary youth leader. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and extradited to Australia shortly after his release last year.
JWire reported that the dates for Kramer’s committal hearing were set for April 23 and 24.
