The Williamsburg Satmar Rebbe Zalman Leib Teitelbaum stopped in Meron last week on his Israel visit. He was there to visit the purported grave of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the purported author of the Zohar, the foundational work of Jewish mysticism that was actually written in 13th Century Spain by a rabbi who wanted to sell the book to make some money, Moses de Leon. Teielbaum's "hadlukah," his lighting of a large fire on the grave that, for hasidic rebbes and other very special guests, has replaced the normative lighting of a small candle. The videos are notable because they show the disregard for public safety by the Rebbe and his large entourage.
