Satmar hasidim staged protests at several polling stations across Israel in an attempt to derail the country’s national elections, Arutz Sheva reported.
The vehemently anti-Zionist hasidic group staged protests in the Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, in Bnei Brak, and in Ramat Beit Shemseh – all Satmar strongholds.
Smaller protests broke out spontaneously throughout the day at other polling stations.
The largest protest was in Ramat Beit Shemesh, where hundreds of Satmar hasidim and their supporters marched in the streets.
Last night, another protest against the elections was staged by Satmar and its allies in Mea Shearim. It was reportedly led by the Satmar Rebbe himself.
Police dispersed the Ramat Beit Shemesh protesters but made no arrests.
After the protest was dispersed, local residents reported that a male whose clothing indicated that he was hareidi entered several polling stations and demanded that people waiting to vote leave. In at least one of those incidents, the man allegedly upset a table with voting materials, causing a major disruption and a delay in voting.
Police reportedly took the man to police headquarters for questioning where he has reportedly refused to cooperate and has refused to even give police his name.
