Two Brooklyn motor-vehicle inspectors – one an Orthodox Jew who apparently is a Williamsburg hasid – were reportedly arrested earlier today for forging safety and emission tests for diesel trucks.
Shlomo Freedman, 54, the owner of a Williamsburg repair shop, and Mark Asselta, 46, the owner of a Bushwick repair shop, were arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court following an undercover investigation by the State Attorney General’s office.
Freedman and Asselta allegedly gave safety and emission certificates to diesel trucks they hadn’t tested.
“My office will not stand for the blatant disregard of air pollution quality standards in Brooklyn. These perpetrators will be held accountable for blackening our skies and our children’s lungs,” State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement.
Schneiderman’s undercover investigators drove a diesel truck rigged to fail an emission test to the two repair shops. Each shop issued certification without performing any safety tests or inserting an emissions meter into the truck’s tailpipe, the AG’s office said.
Tests done afterward showed the truck’s emissions were far higher than the legal limit.
Both Asselta and Freedman could be sentenced to as much as seven years in prison.
