northwestern Negev, pleaded guilty today in Be'er Sheva Magistrates
Court to stealing his own community's Torah scrolls. The specific
charges included aggravated theft, aggravated fraud, fraud, breach of
trust and causing insult to religion.

Rabbi Yehuda Rosilio, the former rabbi of Moshav Brosh in the northwestern Negev region of Israel, pleaded guilty today in Be'er Sheva Magistrates Court to stealing his own community's Torah scrolls. The specific charges included aggravated theft, aggravated fraud, fraud, breach of trust and causing insult to religion.
Rosilio was arrested after his thefts were discovered on Simchat Torah when a community member realized that the scrolls inside the community's ornate Torah covers had been replaced by rolled up cardboard.
Rosilio allegedly sold those scrolls for hundreds of thousands of shekels.
Prosecutors and defense attorneys could not reach an agreement on punishment for Rosilio, but the state agreed to release him to house arrest on a bail bond and with a ban in place that prevents him from working as a rabbi until he is sentenced for his crimes five months from now.
