The man told police that he came to the tomb to pray for a wife. He claimed that a second man, who fled before police could arrest him, told him that the only way for his prayers to be answered would be if he prayed directly to the stones of the tomb itself and not to the ceramic tiles placed on top of them hundreds of years ago. So the two proceeded to smash the tiles.

Jerusalem Police arrested a haredi man for vandalizing King David's Tomb late Wednesday night, the JTA reports.
The man, 30, told police that he came to the tomb to pray for a wife. He claimed that a second man, who fled before police could arrest him, told him that the only way for his prayers to be answered would be if he prayed directly to the stones of the tomb itself and not to the ceramic tiles placed on top of them hundreds of years ago.
The two men then began smashing the tiles and removing them.
The tomb, which is located on Mount Zion adjacent to Jerusalem’s Old City, had been recently restored. Included in that restoration was the repair of many of the tiles the haredi man destroyed.
Almost all scholars doubt that the tomb – if it even is a tomb – is really King David’s burial site.
