Bolivian authorities have arrested a high-ranking government official, Jose Manuel Antezana, for allegedly illegally profiting from the sale of rice seized from Jacob Ostreicher almost two years ago, the AP reports.
Antezana works in the ministry of the presidency.
Ostreicher, a Brooklyn businessman, has been jailed for 18 months in La Paz. He has not yet been charged with a crime.
Prosecutor Javier Monasterios announced Antezana’s arrest, which occurred today, at a press conference in La Paz.
Monasterios accused Antezana of receiving $9,900 from the illegal sale of 18 tons of Ostreicher’s confiscated rice confiscated.
Ostreicher reportedly said that prosecutors told him there would be more arrests.
He is currently being treated for malnutrition at a La Paz clinic after going on a hunger strike to protest his imprisonment.
Ostreicher was supposed to be returned to prison tomorrow. He reportedly fears for his life because powerful people benefited from the theft of his assets.
The Bolivian government was investigating Ostreicher for alleged money laundering and for an obscure derivative connection to a former drug dealer.
