More than 100 Chabad yeshiva students from Israel visiting Brooklyn for the autumn Jewish holidays have reportedly been evicted from their dangerous temporary living quarters by the city.
The students were evicted from their temporary residence in Crown Heights Thursday because they were staying in what the city classifies as an illegal transient hotel – in this case, the basement of an apartment building with only one entrance and exit, and beds and mattress spread out inside like a dormitory of homeless shelter.
Chabad hasidim often travel to the sect's international headquarters in Brooklyn for the autumn Jewish holidays to spend those holidays with their rebbe, a practice that goes back many decades.
The last Chabad rebbe passed away in 1994, but the pilgrimage continued unabated.
The students are expected to find other housing in Crown Heights.
