Rabbis in the Israeli haredi town of Kiryat Sefer have ruled that shaving with electric razors is prohibited. The rabbis reportedly believe that electric razors pull out hair by its roots, destroying each shaft, which is against halakha (Jewish law), as is shaving with a straight razor.
The rabbis also ruled that any store that continues to sell electric razors would be required to refund the buyers' money if asked.

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ullman, who heads Kiryat Sefer’s beit din, religious court, ordered barbers to study the halakhot, Jewish laws, that pertain to shaving and haircuts. Only barbers who pass a test to be given on these halakhot will be certified kosher, Ullman reportedly noted.
