A haredi radio host was fired after he called Zionist Orthodoxy “a cancer in the body of the Jewish faith” whose rabbis are “criminals” who are trying to “destroy Judaism.”
The host, Rabbi Avraham Tamir, also attacked leading Zionist Orthodox rabbis who had called on haredim to serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Rabbi David Stav was "either a heretic or a fool,” Tamir said on air, “and most likely both,” and Rabbi Eliezer Melamed was a“"brat" and a “fool,” Ynet reported.
Tamir was fired by the haredi station, Kol Barama – but only after it received a letter from Amiad Taub of Bayit HaYehudi (Jewish Home) political party.
“Tamir’s derogatory statements about the Zionist Orthodox sector go against journalistic ethics," Taub reportedly wrote, "and were ironically broadcast during the nine days preceding the Tisha B'Av fast – a day in which the people of Israel mourn the destruction of the Temple due to baseless hatred. My friends and I will not cooperate with a radio station that allows such slander against our rabbis. In case your station continues to employ this inciter, we, representatives of Zionist Orthodoxy, will make sure all Zionist Orthodox Jews know about your support of such provocations and call to ban your station as long as Mr. Tamir is still working [for Kol Barama].”
"About an hour after I had sent the letter, the station manager called me and told me that he fired Tamir, and that he personally called Rabbi Stav to apologize. This is undoubtedly proper conduct,” Taub told Ynet.
