Two Satmar hasidim, Rabbi Leib Glanz and his brother Menashe, have reached an “an agreement in principle” to plead guilty to charges they defrauded a federal housing program out of more than $220,000 in rent subsidies, a United States prosecutor said in federal court in Manhattan today, the New York Post reports.
Attorneys for the brothers reportedly confirmed that the agreement had been reached. But along with prosecutors, they would not discuss the details of the pending pleas or if the brothers would serve time in prison.
The brothers are expected to officially enter their guilty pleas on Sept. 4.
Leib Glanz is a former New York City jail chaplain who was forced out of his job after the New York Post reported that he allowed a wealthy inmate to hold a swanky bar mitzvah party for his son in a city jail, complete with catered food and guests. He has also been caught up in other scandals, including the illegal use of parking placards.
The government alleges that Leib Glanz had for years illegally occupied a government-subsidized housing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that was actually approved for his brother Menashe, who in fact was living in another home in the neighborhood.
