Chabad denies it, but there is mounting evidence that Chabad is in fact coordinating a nationwide attempt to destroy Uri L'Tzedek's Tav HaYosher ethical supervision of kosher restaurants as payback for Uri L'Tzedek's short-lived boycott of Agriprocessors in 2008, and out of frustration that Agriprocessors VP Sholom Rubashkin was sentenced to 27 years for bank fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering (something Chabad nonsensically blames on PETA, "the unions," Rabbi Morris Allen, me, and, tangentially, Uri L'Tzedek).
Briefly, what Chabad has allegedly done is to have Chabad adherents across the country tell restaurant owners that have the Tav HaYosher ethical supervision that they will not eat in or support the restaurant until it removes the Tav HaYosher seal.
Chabad denies this, but the individuals who have admitted pressuring restaurants are predominantly Chabad followers.
It's important to note that the Tav HaYosher does not certify food as kosher, and all Tav HaYosher restaurants have kosher supervision from kosher supervision companies and/or local Orthodox rabbinic va'ads.
Chabad has a history of using similar tactics to promote Agriprocessors. During the last decade, Chabad rabbis allegedly told supermarkets and kosher butcher shops across the country that while other brands may be kosher, they would prefer that Agriprocessors be the stores' main (or even exclusive) kosher meat provider. In return, rabbis who secured territory for Agriprocessors were allegedly given 'donations' by the Rubashkin family and free meat from Agriprocessors. This – along with Agriprocessors' predatory pricing, which was paid for in large part by exploiting and stealing from the illegal workers the Rubashkins predominantly employed – crippled all but the largest of Agriprocessors competitors.
Kudos to the Jewish Journal for having the guts to cover this subject.
