The Gerrer Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter, the most politically powerful (and the richest) hasidic leader in Israel is reportedly recovering after undergoing surgery yesterday to remove an unspecified growth, Matzav.com reported.
Alter is said to be in stable condition, and reportedly will remain hospitalized for an unspecified amount of time.
The 73-year-old is the 7th Ger (also known as Gur) rebbe. He came to power in 1996 after his uncle, the 6th rebbe, passed away.
Alter is a son of Rabbi Simcha Bunim Alter, known as the Lev Simcha, who was the 5th rebbe of Ger.
Alter controls the hasidic half of the haredi United Torah Judaism political party.
Alter, his uncle and his father all allegedly used their immense political power to protect indicted child rapist Avrohom Mondrowitz and block his extradition to the United States. Mondrowitz fled Brooklyn a quarter century ago, hours before he was to be arrested for allegedly raping young boys. He is thought to have at least 100 victims in Brooklyn alone.
Child porn was found on Mondrowitz’s home computer by Israel’s cyber crimes police unit in 2007, as were the copies of fraudulent university degrees issued by Mondrowitz through a degree mill he owned.
Nevertheless, Ger continued to back Mondrowitz and israel’s High Court of Justice eventually blocked his extradition to the United States for the second time in the last quarter century.
Those who wish to can pray for the speedy recovery of Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh ben Yutta Henna.
