To Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and all senior members of the Israeli government:
We, members of the global Jewish community, are appalled and outraged by Israel's abominable treatment of African migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. Itself a nation of refugees, Israel should know better than most the torment and horrors endured by those fleeing persecution at the hands of brutal regimes and recognize the responsibility of the Jewish people to those whom we are in the position to help.
In response to the racist incitement of Minister of the Interior Eli Yishai, Deputy Knesset Speaker Danny Danon and MK Miri Regev, and the resulting attacks on African migrants in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, we call upon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to not merely censure but to dismiss from their offices these individuals and all government officials who stoke the flames of hatred.
In response to the implementation of unjust policies which further victimize asylum seekers, we call for the immediate application of humane international standards for the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees – that is, the enforcement of treaties to which Israel is already party – and for a complete overhaul of Israel's asylum application process. We also desire the immediate implementation of the recommendations of the African Refugee Development Center in its report to the United Nations on Israel’s violation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
