Four haredim were busted early this morning for attempting to bribe a child sexual abuse victim with $500,000 to get her to drop charges against the hasidic rabbi who allegedly raped and abused her over several years, a source close to law enforcement personnel siad. The arrests were first reported on DNAinfo.com.
The alleged victim was first raped when she was was 12-years-old. She is now 17.
Three of the suspects are brothers, apparently the sons of the rabbi who gives kosher supervision on the girl’s 22-year-old boyfriend’s Williamsburg restaurant.
The rabbi who allegedly raped the girl, Nechemya Weberman, is an unlicensed therapist who ‘treated’ girls in his Brooklyn home. His patients were often referred by Williamsburg hasidic schools, sometimes allegedly with the ultimatum that the girl be brought to Weberman rather than to a licensed therapist. If not, she would be expelled from school.
The largest of those school, affiliated with the Satmar hasidic dynasty and operated by the United Talmudical Academy (UTA) refused to comply with a subpoena requesting documents for the case. The documents were sought by Weberman's attorneys.
UTA's lack of cooperation delayed the trial and caused the judge to consider – but not yet issue – a contempt of court ruling against UTA.
Reportedly speaking in Yiddish to the girl’s boyfriend, the four men offered to pay $500,000 if she would agree to stop cooperating with the D.A. and insisted that he, his girlfriend, the hasidic community, and Weberman would be better off if she took the bribe and left Brooklyn. Israel, the men suggested, would be a good place she could go to start a new life.
The men also allegedly threatened the boyfriend, telling him they would ruin his restaurant business by, in part, removing his kosher supervision and spreading rumors about him and the restaurant.
The four suspects were arrested shortly after 4 am this morning by investigators working for the District Attorney. They will be arraigned at 10:30 am today.
Rumors about the $500,000 bribe and the threats against the alleged victim's boyfriend have circulated for months.
It is unclear whether the bribery attempt the men were arrested for is one of those, or if the four tried to bribe the girl and extort her boyfriend again more recently.
