Geneticists at Sheba Medical Center in Israel report they have found a unique Jewish genetic mutation in a Native American tribe living in Colorado. The "Ashkenazi mutation" on the BRCA1 gene - a marker unique to European Jews – indicates that the tribe is descended from Jews expelled from Spain in the 15th Century.

Geneticists at Sheba Medical Center in Israel report they have found a unique Jewish genetic mutation in a Native American tribe originally from Mexico but now living in the Mesa Verde area of Colorado. The "Ashkenazi mutation" on the BRCA1 gene - a marker unique to European Jews – indicates that the tribe is descended from a Jew expelled from Spain in the 15th Century.
Many Anusim, secret Jews hiding from the Inquisition, came to the Americas.
However, the researchers say this is the first Native American tribe that has been found to carry the gene.
The tribe has no known Jewish customs and no oral tradition of being descended from Jews.
The paper, which will be published in the European Journal of Human Genetics, notes that the tribe’s Jewish ancestor may have sailed to America with Columbus.
