Internet Caused Fatal Car Accident, Haredi Rabbis Say

A car crash that killed eight members of one family happened due to the spiritual weakness the Jewish people is suffering because of Internet use, Rabbis Chaim Kanievsky and Ahron Leib Steinman said.
The two men are senior haredi leaders. Steinman is the defacto leader of Ashkenazi haredim since Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv's illness. Kanievsky, a candidate for leadership, is the son of the Steipler Gaon and Elyashiv's son-in-law.
“A lot of times people blame the driver for making an error that caused the accident, but this is not the case,” Behadrei Haredim quoted Steinman as saying. “Instead, Heaven causes the mistake to be made, because the decree has been decreed and is established, may the Merciful One spare us.”
And that decree, Steinman claimed, is due to Internet use.
Speaking to close associates Tuesday, Kanievsky called the Internet a “treif tool” that has “brought the people of Israel to destruction,” Behadrei Haredim reported. “It’s required,” Kanievsky reportedly said, “to get it out of the house.”
The assignment of blame to the Internet coincides with a massive anti-Internet gathering held by haredim in New York City on Sunday, and a new push by owners of companies that produce Internet filters to sell their products to haredim.
The originator of Sunday's gathering, Rabbi Nechemia Gottlieb, is a part owner of one of those companies.
