Rabbi In Alleged Murder-For-Hire Fit For Trial, Judge Says

Rabbi Victor Koltun is fit to stand trial for murder.
Koltun has had five psychiatric examinations. Judge Jeffrey Berry ruled that the consensus of the five exams is that Koltun is fit to stand trial, the Times Herald-Record reported yesterday.
The prosecution accepted the judge’s finding. The defense, however, did not. Defense attorney Paul Brite asked for time so the defense can hire its own psychiatrist.
Another hearing is necessary to resolve the issue, the Times Herald-Record reported, Judge Berry scheduled the hearing for July 5th.
Koltun, who lives in Brooklyn, has been held in the Orange County, New York jail since December 2010. Brite asked the judge to order transport for Koltun to Bellvue Hospital for the defense’s psychiatric exam. The judge refused.
The 42-year-old Koltun is charged with first- and second-degree murder in the Nov. 4, 2010 murders of former police officer Frank Piscopo and his nephew, Gerald Piscopo, who were shot execution-style in an alleged murder-for-hire scheme. Two of Koltun’s codefendants pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and are now in prison.
