The Jerusalem Online University, first exposed here two years ago as an Aish HaTorah front group and which does not follow academic rules, now has its credits accepted by Touro College, the haredi-founded university meant to accept yeshiva credits and wash them so actual universities would unknowingly accept them.
The Forward has piece on Touro College's bizarre relationship with the Jerusalem Online University, a right wing pro-Israel haredi advocacy group which, despite its name, has no actual relationship to university academics or scholarship. Instead, as first reported on FailedMessiah.com it is an Aish HaTorah front group, meant to manipulate kids in to attending Aish HaTorah haredi outreach programs and to manipulate kids into adopting right wing political views on Israel.
Touro itself specializes in granting college credit for yeshiva studies, in effect "laundering" those yeshiva "credits" so universities don't realize what they are.
For example, a kid attends Aish HaTorah or Ohr Somayach. After a year or two, he decides to go back to his university and finish his degree. The yeshiva can't talk him out of it. So the yeshiva prepares a transcript that makes sitting in yeshiva study hall look like attending actual academic university classes. An entry level Talmud class becomes classes in law, history and ethics and theology. Then Touro's Israel office accepts those "credits" and issues a transcript of its own. The student then returns to his American university, presents Touro's transcript – which makes no mention of the word "yeshiva" and no mention of the fact that many of these classes had no tests or papers to measure knowledge gained. The unsuspecting university accepts some or all of the credits, and the student quickly finishes his degree.
The situation is even worse when the yeshiva or kollel is haredi and designated for haredi-from-birth students. In these cases, entire classes are not simply renamed – they're invented out of whole cloth. A guy who spent two years sitting in a kollel study hall for half a day drinking coffee and talking with friends, and whose only actual class is a Talmud lecture given by the head of the kollel once or twice per week gets that dozens of credits for "classes" that do not exist.
This fraudulant process is mimicked by yeshivas that have been granted their own status as "accredited colleges."
But Touro has reached a new low.
The Jerusalem Online University is not a university or a college or even an academic institution. It's haredi outreach and right wing Israel propaganda.
