In response to massive condemnation of the forced gender segregation on the B110 bus line, a hasidic-owned privately operated public bus line in Brooklyn that services a primarily haredi and hasidic clientele, Private Transportation Corporation issues a new and apparently backdated schedule and guidelines to mask its role in illegally forcing gender segregation.
As first reported here three days ago, the B110's Yiddish schedule and guidelines ordered passengers to segregate by gender:
According to the psak [religious ruling] of the rabbis, men should concentrate themselves in the front seats in the first half of the bus, and women in the second half. Under no circumstances will men be allowed to stand in the second half of the bus, among the women, nor will women be allowed among the men in the first half of the bus.
When the front part of the bus is crowded with standing men, women are not allowed to board the bus from the front entrance in an attempt to push through between the men [to get to the back of the bus]. If possible, women will be allowed to enter the bus through the back door, after they paid first in front to the driver.
It's English language guidelines did not contain that extensive mandate, but did contain one line saying women should be allowed to board first when the bus is crowded.
Now the Private Transportation Corporation has published a new version of its schedule and guidelines omitting the mandate to segregate by gender. Note that it makes the new guidelines appear to have been published in September, even though this seems to be false. That is important because the PTC wrote the city claiming that it did not condone or force gender segregation. That letter is reproduced below.
Here is the new schedule and guidelines:
Now here is the B110 schedule and guidelines distributed on B110 buses as late as end of October 2011. The illegal text is in the red boxes:
The PTC falsely told the city it did not practice, endorse or enforce gender segregation on the B110:
It's good that PTC removed the illegal language from its schedule and guidelines.
But that does not change the fact that the PTC illegally forced passengers to segregate by gender and lied about that to the city.
And that illegal action should be punished.
