Billboards promoting Oz Latmura, a program meant to improve the salaries and working conditions of high school teachers while providing Israeli children with a better education, have been intentionally defaced by the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak.
City workers placed large stickers reading “illegal ad” over the photos of women teachers on the billboards.
The women depicted on the billboards were reported to be modestly dressed.
"We have nothing against the Secondary School Teachers Association," a spokesman for the city, Rabbi Avraham Tenenboim, told Ynet. "Our anger is directed at the company that posted the ads, which violate the agreement with the Municipality.
“Municipal law bans ads which include pictures of women…. [Posting pictures of women] hurts the haredi public's feelings, and therefore we had the woman's photo [on the billboard] covered [with those stickers]. The signs that include pictures of male teachers only can be posted in the city without any problem."
