Badatz Yerushalayim, the über-haredi hechsher from Mea Shearim, admits it charges companies for supervision of products that cannot ever be treife.
Do bleach and other non-edible or even poisonous cleaning products need kosher supervision?
Of course not.
Yet we've all seen bleach, cleanser, and other such products stamped with an OU or other kosher supervision mark.
Now Badatz Yerushalayim admits these products can never be non-kosher and do not require kosher supervision – even though Badatz sells such kosher supervision to the products' makers.
Badatz claims it does so because uneducated kosher consumers ask manufacturers for kosher supervision on these products and the manufacturers in turn ask Badatz to sell them the supervision, and the Badatz complies.
