Why are financial crimes so common in the haredi community? What can be done to correct this problem? The answer? Teach ethics in cheder, yeshiva and seminary; live ethically so children have positive role models; and have organizations stop honoring people based solely on their wealth.
Rabbi Benjamin Blech and Professors Heshy and Linda Friedman discussed Eliyahu Weinstein and the current rash of haredi crime on Zev Brenner's Talkline radio show Saturday night.
I'll just say that none of these experts are historians, and they err in thinking these types of haredi crime are primarily a modern occurrence.
What makes today different is that there are many sources of information, including blogs, and it is much harder to keep crimes hidden than it was 20 or 120 years ago.
