UPDATE 2:30 pm:
A few moments ago I spoke with one of the original American supporters of the rebbe and his father, the previous rebbe, Jacob Joseph Weisz.
Asked to sum up his feelings on the case, he answered with one word: "Disappointed." Then he said:
"It's been a very difficult year. We're all very proud of the institutions and all the work of the Spinka. But we're very disappointed the case happened, that our institutions were supported through crime.
"This episode is a wakeup call. Rabbis have to adhere to the strictest interpretation of complying with the laws of the government.
"This whole thing is a devastating blow for all the young people who look to the rebbe as a role model. What do we say to our kids who are doing wrong? The rebbe did it too?"
