Marzel, Rabbi Wolpo to run for Knesset
Extreme rightists form new party, Our Land of Israel, which seeks to tackle 'existential threat faced by country'
Right-wing activists Baruch Marzel and Rabbi Sholom Dov Wolpo [more here] declared on Monday the founding of a new party – Eretz Israel Shelanu (Our Land of Israel) that will run for Knesset in the upcoming general elections.
"Our entire existence here is being challenged – can we survive the wrongdoings inflicted on us by the leadership?" asked Wolpo, who also heads SOS Israel, an organization dedicated to fighting any peace accords that involve land concessions.
At a press conference in Jerusalem the two also slammed the Habayit Hayehudi party for failing to genuinely represent their constituency and oppose settlement evacuation.
"We are facing a true existential threat and plan to sacrifice ourselves, our money and everything we have for the nation of Israel and the land of Israel," said Marzel, adding that "Habayit Hayehudi is a farce."
On Sunday Rabbi Wolpo was summoned by the police for questioning in two separate cases. One is related to a conference he held about a year and-a-half ago, during which he offered soldiers money if they disobeyed their commanders' orders. The other investigation surrounds statements he made last year saying that the prime minister should be treated as a traitor.
"These are politically-motivated investigations aimed at stopping me from running for Knesset," Wolpo claimed Monday.
Rabbi Wolpo is by most accounts the most popular leader among Chabad followers in Israel today.
