Briefly, I think Vinegrad dodged questions, conflated the events related to Rubashkin's bail (even after caught doing so), and only backed off a bit when listeners called the judge an antisemite and demanded he be removed from the bench.
Sholom M. Rubashkin's mother Rivka called in from Postville and identified herself only as "Rivka Rubashkin." When asked by Zev Brenner what her relationship is to Sholom M. Rubashkin, she replied, "a far, far, family member." She did not modifiy that statement.
As I wrote earlier, I find the government's use of the Law of Return troubling.
But the blame for that should lie with the criminals that used Israel as a hideout, and those who enabled them.
Vinegrad also denied he is representing Sholom M. Rubashkin. But when a called said something to the effect of, "If you aren't representing Rubashkin you probably will be in the near future," Vinegrad was silent.
Also note that Rubashkin's offer to be placed under 24 monitoring or armed guard at his expense was not made until Friday, December 5, 2008.
Motions like this often are not answered for several days or more.
Yet Rubashkin's team (apparently including Vinegrad) used this late motion to argue the government was being unfair in denying bail.
In other words, Rubashkin and his attorneys did this before the government had the time to respond.
Vinegrad's partner Eric Holder will be the Attorney General in Obama's administration.
Understand Vinegrad's appearance for what most probably is – a crass attempt by the Rubashkins to intimidate the US Attorney.
