Workers told Postville plant will reopen

POSTVILLE - More than six months after the federal immigration raid that threw this town into turmoil, county and city governments are taking steps to provide relief to displaced workers.
City clerk Darcy Radleff said today that she and Mayor Robert Penrod will meet at 4 p.m. today with Allamakee County Emergency Management Coordinator Chris Dahlstrom to plan an emergency shelter that could open at week's end in Postville's Turner Hall.
Workers said this morning that the Agriprocessors plant suspended operations. A security officer told workers that the company plans to resume processing chickens and turkeys on Thursday.
The security officers also said paychecks would be available Thursday for employees who had worked the week of Nov. 3 and on Friday for employees who worked last week.
Radleff said the city and county relief effort will involve volunteers who have been providing food, shelter and transportation to displaced workers.
She said as many as 200 displaced workers remain in the Postville area.
