He has a criminal record stretching back to the late 1970s. He bribed a Congressman, ran a corrupt poverty program and a lunch program that fed children rotting, stale food. He sent salami and cheese sandwiches to children requesting kosher meals.
And then he went big time.
He stole $44 million from Fannie Mae in a much publicized case of mortgage fraud.
Yesterday he pleaded guilty to that fraud and will serve 10 years and one month or less in federal prison.
In between his earlier federal crimes and the mortgage fraud, he wrote a book for ArtScroll and helped lead a successful campaign to have Rabbi Nosson Slifkin, the Zoo Rabbi, banned by leading haredi rabbis. Slifkin was deemed to be a threat to Orthodox Judaism because he advocated a universe older than 5765 years and professed that Talmudic sages could have erred in non-legal matters.
