Here's how it was supposed to work. The government was to appoint 10 new conversion judges. These new judges were supposed to be from the moderate wing of the Religious Zionist movement – in other words, Modern Orthodox. The aim was to make the conversion process (i.e., horrid bureaucracy that so injures potential converts) a bit kinder and eaiser to navigate.
But something went terribly wrong.
…Rabbi Shlomo Amar, the Sefardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, that's what, as Ha'aretz reports:
…Leading officials involved in the conversion process said the original objective was to choose more liberal judges who would make conversion easier.
[But instead, t]he officials said the selection committee, headed by Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, made a deal to appoint four ultra-Orthodox judges who currently serve in the private rabbinical court of Rabbi Nissim Karelitz in Bnei Brak and four rabbis who are affiliated with Shas or Amar's associates.…
"Over the last few weeks, there has been a lot of pressure on committee members from ultra-Orthodox quarters and also from religious Zionist rabbis who are hostile to the conversion issue. Ultimately they'll bring in judges who have no connection with or sympathy for the public that will appear before them," one of the officials said.…
An earlier Ha'aretz piece from January of this year explains the motivation of those "religious Zionist rabbis who are hostile to the conversion issue":
"These judges want to gain legitimacy in the eyes of the Haredim, in part because they know it's the only way they have of advancing as judges in the system," a senior official in the Chief Rabbinate said, "and they also belong to the Haredi-nationalist wing [Haredal] of the national-religious camp, which feels increasing alienation toward the state."
That same article goes on to note that conversion judges are increasingly delaying immersion in the mikva for converts who have already accepted upon themselves the yoke of the commandments in front of a religious court. This delay can be four months long.
This is coupled with unprecedented spying on these (for want of a better term) half-converts. Indeed, Ha'aretz claims one such half-convert had her conversion denied after an unnamed spy saw her wearing pants.
So, self-serving Haredal rabbis fawning at the feet of haredim are impeding conversions and hurting potential converts and the state.
You might recognize the behavior and theology of these Haredal rabbis. It is very similar to the behavior and theology of American rabbis who call themselves Centrist Orthodox (except when raising money as Modern Orthodox is more effective. Ditto when calling on the legacy of the Rav, Rabbi J. B. Soleveitchk is necessary.)
These so-called Centrist American rabbis are lead by Rabbis Hershal 'Shoot the Prime Minister – only joking, wink, wink, nod, nod' Schachter and 'Baruch Lanner is a saint and scholar and you, brother of one of his victims, have no standing and are spreading loshon hara against the esteemed Rabbi Lanner' Willig.
Is it simply a coincidence that Amar appointed 8 haredim, some his own cronies, just a week after the Rabbinical Council of America capitulated to almost every demand Rabbi Amar made? Or that one or both of the two remaing appointments will probably go to Haradal rabbis?
I don't think so.
The RCA sold out Jews, plain and simple. And that sell out, under the leadership (if you can call it that) of Rabbis Schachter and Willig, made it all the easier for Amar to screw Modern Orthodox Israeli rabbis.
So, what will the future bring?
Revoked conversions, conversions ruled invalid years after the fact, witch hunts to 'purify' Judaism from "insincere" converts, and a growing religious tyranny presided over by rabbis, not mullahs.
The age of terror is upon us. Lock your doors people and close your blinds – the rabbis are coming. May God save us all.
