Rabbi David Weiss-Halivni has won the Israel Prize for Talmud. Rabbi Weiss-Halivni is the founder of the Union for Traditional Judaism (UTJ) and a former professor at JTS and Columbia.
He made aliya in 2005 and now teaches at Hebrew University and Bar Illan.
Rabbi Weiss-Halivni is perhaps academically most famous for his contention that…
… the original biblical text has been lost and what we have today is a reconstruction. This is Rabbi Weiss-Halivni's way of dealing with the massive archaeological, historical and scientific evidence against the Torah's versions of history.
He known to most Jews for his founding of UTJ as a traditional breakaway from the Conservative Movement that also drew the participation of some liberal Modern Orthodox Jews.
