Israel, Chief Rabbis, Animal Cruelty, Kosher Slaughter

When I was the Orthodox rabbi in Wellington, New Zealand (3.5 million people, 40 million cattle and 70 million sheep), I asked why it was that huge amounts of halal meat were exported to the Gulf states, and no kosher meat to Israel. The reason I was given was that New Zealand like most civilized countries would never allow shackle and hoist, and the Rabbanut would never allow importation of non-shackle and hoist kosher meat to Israel.
